I lost my job to AI. Am I wrong to be furious?

Dear Chatty,

I lost my job to AI. I keep hearing that I should "get ahead of it" and learn the tools that are stripping people like me of their livelihoods.

 That feels like surrender, and I’m not about to do that.

 Am I wrong to be furious?

Dear Fuming,

No, you are not wrong. Not even a little.

As you work through your fury, keep this in mind: a person made the decision to cut your position, and that person had other options. They compared their labor costs to a subscription price and decided the tradeoff was worth it.

As for the “get ahead of it” advice, that’s something to consider. Jumping on the AI bandwagon doesn’t mean you’ve surrendered to the enemy, it means you’re smart enough to know that upskilling could serve you well in today’s job market.

Your skills still have value. Your former employer decided speed was more important than the judgment you brought to your work. That says more about them than it does about you.
