What’s up with AI always giving answers in threes?

Whenever I ask AI for help, it gives me answers in perfect little groups of three — three steps, three tips, three takeaways. Is this some kind of AI superstition?

AI loves threes because humans love threes.
The Rule of Three is older than AI by a few thousand years. Rhetoric. Comedy. Fairy tales. It shows up in architecture, in music, and in the way a sentence finds its rhythm. Interior designers will tell you a grouping of three objects on a shelf feels resolved in a way that two or four simply does not.
Human brains find a group of three fulfilling because it’s complete without being excessive. AI absorbed that preference the same way it absorbed everything else: by processing an enormous amount of human output and learning what felt finished.
The good news is you can break the spell anytime. Ask for one recommendation. Ask for five. Ask it to write the way you actually talk. AI will follow your lead faster than most humans will, and it will not be offended when you tell it the three-step format doesn’t work for you.
Your voice is the brief. Give it something specific, and it will stop defaulting to the pattern.
It's not magic. It's mimicry.
