Does AI make my skills as a writer irrelevant?

I'm a career writer and love what I do. Or at least I did, until now. The company wants me to use AI, and I’m pissed. They say “AI is just a tool," like a paintbrush. But a paintbrush doesn't have a voice. AI does, and I'm not letting it steal mine. Did my skills just become irrelevant overnight?

No. Your skills as a writer didn't become irrelevant overnight. They became more necessary.

You're right that the paintbrush analogy is a cop-out. AI isn't a passive instrument. It has patterns, preferences, and a strong gravitational pull toward the generic. Left to its own devices, it will write something competent, forgettable, and indistinguishable from the millions of samples it trained on. That’s not the writing.

The angle is the writing. The argument is the writing. Knowing your audience, where to focus, what to cut, and when the whole thing needs to be scrapped and restarted — that's the writing. AI doesn't do any of that. It can't. It has no stake in whether the message lands.

You do. That's still the job.
